Aces fall in Big 8 opener, 35-20

Mount Vernon, behind the passing of quarterback Eric Stemple, defeated Mount Carmel, 35-20, in the Big 8 Conference opener for both clubs on Friday night.

Mount Vernon [3-0] bolted to a 13-0 lead before the Mount Carmel offense could touch the football. After an initial touchdown that came just four plays and 1:33 into the game, the Aces fumbled away the ensuing kickoff. The Wildcats, ranked 10th in the latest Indiana Class 3A poll, then put together a 34-yard scoring drive.

Mount Carmel [1-1] regrouped and scored the next 14 points to take its' only lead of the game, 14-13, in the second quarter. But, another 15-point surge by the Wildcats before halftime left the hosts up, 28-14, at intermission.

Both teams scored once in the second half. Mount Carmel, ranked second in the initial WYNG/Cal Preps Illinois Class 4A poll, was stopped inside the five-yard line on one drive.

Stemple, a senior, had his hand in all five Mount Vernon scores. He scored three times, and threw for the other two. He finished 16-of-21 on the night for 179 yards. He now has six TD passes on the year. He was picked off twice by Mount Carmel - by Ryan Bumpus and Beau Grant - his first two interceptions of the year.

Meanwhile, Aces quarterback Alex Hale, just a sophomore, tossed his first career touchdown pass, a 16-yard flip to Bumpus in the second quarter.

Hale also scored once on the ground on a one-yard keeper. And, fullback Ryan Sanders hit the end zone from four yards away to round out the scoring in the third quarter.

Mount Vernon piled up 324 yards in total offense, to 189 for the Aces.

The loss ended an 8-game conference winning streak for the Aces, the two-time defending champs in the Big 8. A 12-game regular-season winning streak, dating back to 2006, also came to an end.

The Aces host Princeton on Friday night in their home opener. The kickoff is set for 7:00pm at Riverview Stadium. Coverage on WYNG-FM 94.9 begins at 6:00pm.
